A consideration based on a writing by Jessa O’My Heart – Junkie Athiest
In Junkie Atheist, Jessa O’My Heart presents a penetrating and unwavering description of the human condition when it is bound to fear. He names this state “the Junkie Atheist,” not as a label for a select few, but as a revelation of the pervasive addiction to fear that underlies all of ordinary, unconscious, conventional life.
This teaching is not about ‘religion versus non-religion’, or belief versus disbelief. It is about penetrating the identification with life as a “Junkie Atheist” – to live unconsciously devoted to fear, fear of loss, fear of death, fear of the unknown. In our fallen state of consciousness, fear has become the hidden god worshipped in every decision, reaction and grasping effort to secure safety. And the karma of this addiction, as Jessa says, is a perpetual looping through suffering, until death and beyond:
“…a downward spiral into the dark beyond all dark, the sunken depth beyond all sunken depths… until the narrow space becomes all but irretrievably lost in the perpetual hell of its own event.”
This is not mere metaphor. He is describing the actual energetic consequence of living bound to fear: a contraction of consciousness so complete that the being loses sight of its own True Nature.
The Many Faces of the Junkie Atheist
Jessa makes it clear that this addiction is not limited to obvious materialists or skeptics. It appears everywhere – in the scientist, the philosopher, the priest, the healer, the newshound, the “spiritual seeker.” Every being alive in this place knows the patterns of fear intimately, regardless of who or where. Why? Because even the highest forms of knowledge or ritual, when not grounded in Real Awakening, simply become another form of pretence, limitation. They hide fear rather than truly dissolve it. There may be some level of comfort or consolation. But truly, without the radical release of fear at its’ source, all ‘ways’ become ways to survive inside the prison of fear, rather than a way out.
This is why he writes:
“The scientist is the Junkie Atheist, the religionist is the Junkie Atheist, the philosopher is the Junkie Atheist, the pretenders to spiritual life are the Junkie Atheists…”
This is a a stark but necessary mirror. It points out that the state of fear-worship is ordinary. It is the common baseline of this world. Most of us live in it without ever naming it, or even really acknowledging it. But that fear based reality becomes the foundation for how we build our lives.
What Is Real Intelligence?
Against this backdrop, Jessa relfects to us what Real Intelligence is. Not the functional intelligence of skills, strategies, or learned knowledge, but a freedom of energy – a consciousness not bound to fear or the reactive rituals of ordinary life.
“Real Intelligence is free energy… It begins when we are unable to make any gesture toward our destiny of seeking in dilemma and we begin to suffer our own condition of addiction to fear.”
This is a critical turning point or revalation. When we feel the condition of fear fully, without running, without distracting ourselves, something begins to break open. The endless cycle of seeking loses its power. In that space of surrender, Real Intelligence dawns.
And what is the perfection of this Real Intelligence? Happiness. Love. God Realisation. The Peace beyond all peace. It is the return to the Present Immortal, the living awareness beyond fear, beyond the addiction to survival.
Living Beyond Fear – The Alchymie as a Practice
So, what does this consideration ask of us? It invites us to truly see how fear underlies all of our ordinary activity. This consideration asks us to stop pretending. To stop seeking refuge in rituals, identities and even “spiritual” performances that never touch the core addiction of fear. And it invites us to a practice living beyond fear.

The Alchymist
The Junkie Atheist is addicted to fear. The Karma or consequence of this addiction is being returned again and again to the vision of our own making each day, each month, each year, each lifetime after lifetime. The continued addiction to fear leads to a downward spiral into the dark beyond all dark, the sunken depth beyond all sunken depths, the desolation beyond all desolation, the anger beyond all anger, the sorrow beyond all sorrow until the narrow space becomes all but irretrievably lost in the perpetual hell of its own event. This is the position of most ‘beings’ associated with this world in this time, superficially extended into conventional rituals of enactment of pretence. Pretence to ‘Real knowledge’ as scientists, as philosophers, as religionists, as ‘spiritualists’, as ‘healers’ and all the desperate psychotic babble of the daily newshounds and pernicious fanatics of trivia. Thus the scientist is the Junkie Atheist, the religionist is the Junkie Atheist, the philosopher is the Junkie Atheist, the pretenders to spiritual life are the Junkie Atheists and all the endless riffraff that pretends to the title of ‘humanity’ in this place is the Junkie Atheist.
The Junkie Atheist is obviously rife, in fact the usual abominable presence in this world, it is signed by all the ‘shocking’ occurrences that make up the daily news and the vast darkness present in the aberrated insidious family cults huddling in their hovels, feasting vicariously on all the ubiquitous suffering communicated as all the forms of brain-numbing media ooze.
The Junkie Atheist presents as zero intelligence since there is no creative freedom possible, no Real purification possible, no transformation possible, no transfiguration possible because the worship of fear does not deliver such wonders. Fear perpetuates and delivers suffering until it explodes egoically in events such as the vast wars of the Twentieth Century.
Intelligence is an awakened blessing. Intelligence is not merely all the functional skills that are displayed by individuals everywhere from the highest to the lowest, such skills are the lowest possibility that might be called Intelligence.
Real Intelligence is free energy, energy not bound to the ritual enactment of daily life and therefore not bound to all the enforced reactive displays that is the lot of most ‘human beings’. Real Intelligence begins when we are unable to make any gesture toward our destiny of seeking in dilemma and we begin to suffer our own condition of addiction to fear. In this awakened disposition Real Intelligence is magnified at last to perfect freedom from any and all implications of this mortal ‘human’ existence. The perfection of Real Intelligence is Happiness, is Reality, is the Divine, is God-Realisation, is Love, is the Present Immortal. The drink, Junkie Atheist reveals the Junkie to him or herself, helping the individual to practice living beyond fear until that practice is fruitful in perfect Realisation of the Truth of us where all has been released into God and at last there is nothing to defend, nothing to prove. The peace beyond all Peace. So be it!
